On a sunny summer day, solar energy is absorbed by the roof, heating the roof sheathing and causing the underside of the sheathing and the roof framing to radiate heat downward toward the attic floor. When a Radiant heat barrier is placed on attic floor, much of the heat radiated from the host roof is reflected back toward the roof. This makes the top surface of the insulation cooler that it would have been without a Radiant heat barrier and thus reduces the amount of heat that moves through the insulation into the rooms below the ceiling.

Under the same conditions, a roof mounted Radiant heat barrier works by reducing the amount of radiation incident on insulation. Radiant heat Barrier works by reflecting heat away from the roof. It reflects 97% of the heat and allows 3% of the pass through…known as 5% emissivity. In the process of reflecting heat, foil does not absolve heat. Bulk insulation material, like FG/RW blocks heat flowing through, but in the process, heat is absolved. This heat will be release back to the surrounding once the environment cools when the sunset. 99.9% pure, polish AI foil has 97% reflectivity, 3% Emisivity. R + E = 1.0

Ambient temp 30º C and roof temp 39º C

Building without Radiant heat barrier under amb temp 30º C the internal temp is >35º C while the roof temp can be as high as 39º more.

When ZELLTECH foil is installed, the internal temp is close to or at amb temp. However, no Radiant heat barrier can reduce internal temp to be below amb temp. It requires Air Con to get down the below 30º C for this example Whitout Radiant heat barrierm the air con runs on full load, thus wasting.

However when foil is installed, the load is reduced by 25%, thus energy is saved and air con unit capacity canbe reduced, saving initial capital equipment cost. The expected payback by installing foil insulation is approx 18-24 months, Actual payback depends on the installed cost, materials used, the energy cost and daily usage on Air unit.

Suitable for factory or industrial buildings. For example : a retrofit project in an assembly factory in a tropical country. One unit insulated and an identical unit was not insulated to show the benefits to owner. The temp difference these 2 units was 5-7ºC. at the floor level.

Siding Applications

Radiant barriers can be extremely effective at lowering radiant heat transfers when used in exterior siding applications but again, it MUST have an air space on at least one side of the radiant barrier for it to work. In this application, a radiant barrier is installed like a typical house wrap yet before the siding is installed, you must attach 1 X 2 furring strips over the top of the radiant barrier to which to attach the siding. This creates the required air space for the radiant barrier to be effective.

 

Roofing Applications

A radiant barrier can be very effective at BLOCKING radiant heat when installed in conjunction with roofing and siding material, however, the radiant barrier MUS T be installed with an air space on at least one side of it. As long as there is at least a 3/4″ air space on either side of the radiant barrier, the application will be effective at BLOCKING radiant heat.

Roofing systems that utilize purlins or batten/counter battens are ideal for the addition of a radiant barrier because the roofing easily provides for the required air space already. Metal, tile, and slate roofing systems are examples of such roofing systems where a radiant barrier can be easily incorporated.

Equally as important as the air space on a radiant barrier is the requirement that a radiant barrier remain clean and dry in any application.

The picture below shows a batten/counter batten system with a slate/tile material with a radiant barrier on top of the counter battens. The radiant barrier is installed on the top of the counter battens in non-watertight applications. This allows the radiant barrier to remain dry while also achieving the 3/4″ air space requirement.

Don’t Do This…

Because a radiant barrier needs an air space on at least one side, installing it directly below felt and shingles will NOT allow the radiant barrier to block any radiant heat. Instead, the heat from the shingles and felt will conduct all the way through the barrier, into the attic, and eventually in the living spaces.

Instead Do This…

If an asphalt shingle roof is being installed, you should install the radiant barrier to the underside of the roof decking or roof rafters in the attic space below.
